Can tariffs effectively protect domestic production and contribute to sustainable economic growth?
History offers little support for this idea—there is no reliable historical case where high tariffs led to long-term, sustainable economic growth. In contrast, deregulation and reduced tax burdens have repeatedly spurred economic expansion. [of course, only in the countries, where life, dignity, and property were effectively protected]
Are economic models predicting harm from high tariffs actually applicable in real-world scenarios? If so, under what conditions?
We will examine two nearly opposite cases:
- Tariffs imposed on Canada
- Tariffs imposed on the People’s Republic of China
