Companies (and countries) don't just hand out freebies for fun. They have a plan to make more money in the long run. Here's how:

1.  Free as an Enticement: Stores use that free thing as an enticement to get you to come in and buy the product. Stores offer free samples because it encourages you to buy the thing they gave you.
   

2.  Free as Bait: Ever got a freebie but had to give your credit card? Watch out for those monthly charges.
   

3.  Free for Your Info: Companies trade free stuff for data about you. The company can then either use this information to increase the effectiveness of their marketing, which results in them selling more products, or they can sell that information to another company for money.
   

4.  Free to Kill Competition: Sometimes, free products are used to push out rivals. they use “free” products to get rid of the competition, take over the market and THEN raise prices to make up for the lost revenue.
   

5.  Free to Get You Hooked: First, it's free. Then, once you're addicted, you start paying…. Once the hook is in -then the charges begin.
   

And that my friends is how “Free” works.
